| CAMP KESEM & AVIVA CENTER |
 |
Camp Kesem's two-fold mission: 1) provide kids whose parents have
or have had cancer with a summer camp experience that gives them a chance
to be kids and 2) allow college students to channel their passion for making
a difference while developing critical leadership skills for long term social
impact.
Camp Kesem empowers
a generation of student-leaders at college campuses nationwide by enabling
them to develop critical leadership skills and channel a passion for long-term
social impact, to a magical week for children in need.
As part of the Camp Kesem - SYP Partnership, there will be 4 new campuses
joining the program in 2007 - Columbia, Emory, George Washington and University
of Florida in Miami. SYP is able to identify, inspire, and empower more
than 300 new social-change agents on these campuses.

| SYP Scholarship Fund Report |
| General Statement |
 |
Aviva and Family and Children's
Services is grateful for being chosen by the Society of Young Philanthropists
(SYP) as the recipient of $20,000 from the proceeds SYP's 2007 fundraising
in support of the SYP Scholarship Fund (SYPSF)
The SYPSF was established a restricted account designated for the sole purpose
of assisting graduates of Aviva High School, a state-licensed, fully accredited,
all girls special education high school, who have gone on to post-secondary
education in community colleges, colleges or universities or vocational
training programs.
Funds are allocated to our graduates on an as-needed basis as determined
by Aviva administrative and school staff. Aviva's goal is to help as many
as our graduates as possible complete their education and/or vocational
training during this academic year and in future years as SYPSF monies are
available. An additional goal is to continue to grow the SYPSF to accommodate
future graduates of our school.
| Program Description |
 |
As SYP is aware, Aviva
High School (AHS) is one of only a few all girls' high schools providing
both educational and therapeutic services at the same site and is the only
non-public school that serves non-pregnant teens.
AHS provides special education classes, grades 8-12, for 84 students at
any one time. The student body consists of 42 adolescent girls living in
our 24-hour, long-term residential treatment centers PLUS an additional
42 adolescent girls from the community who live in foster care, or with
their families, but still need the structure and individual attention provided
by AHS that is missing in larger, public school settings. Students attending
AHS enroll at various times throughout the school year; over the course
of one academic year a total of approximately 160 at-risk girls are enrolled.
At AHS, we are very concerned with ensuring that our seriously troubled
and at-risk students receive the specialized education they need as soon
as soon as possible so that they may succeed academically. AHS meets each
student's need for intensive, individualized attention and a structured
academic environment.
While at AHS, girls are able to overcome trauma and maximize their educational
potential. Within one week of admission, each girl receives a psychological
profile and complete evaluation of her academic needs. The student, educational/counseling
staff and parents or guardians, if appropriate, create an Individualized
Education Plan (IEP) to meet the student's particular academic, behavioral
and social-emotional needs. Students take proficiency tests regularly to
assess growth in learning.
AHS has a 1:6 teacher-to-student ratio that does not exist in traditional
public schools and is essential to the progress of our at-risk population.
AHS provides a challenging curriculum and small group instruction is subjects
such as English, Math, Science, and History; and Physical Education. A variety
of electives, e.g., Nature Appreciation, Dance, Poetry, Gardening, Student
Council, and other exciting courses, are offered to connect these very urban
students with the world around them.
Critical to each girl's success, is her assignment to a counselor who meets
with each girl at least once per week, and as special needs arise. The counselors
provide three main services to our students: a) therapeutic intervention;
b) liaison communication to outside community referrals for students and
their families; and, c) college/career counseling. Where indicated, students
and their families are referred to Aviva's
Community Mental Health Services (CMHS) for supplemental services, such
as medication management, psychiatric intervention, or family therapy.
While at AHS girls, receive comprehensive educational and therapeutic services
that help them overcome trauma, maximize their educational potential, and
improve their social/behavioral skills. The girls take challenging courses
in a structured educational environment that nurtures their innate abilities.
In addition, the girls receive "wraparound services" to meet their
emotional and psychological needs. These include mental health therapy,
art therapy, and skill building in stress management and conflict resolution.
AHS is proud that at least 95% of our graduates will continue on to post-secondary
education in community college, college or vocational programs.
